Labor laws in Sri Lanka are very important for managing human resources in organizations. Due to this, laws have been prepared considering employee wages, working hours and employee rights and employee work environment safety, it can be challenging for human resource departments to pay attention to employee well-being and follow these laws. For HR managers, this means ensuring compliance with these rules while providing a work environment that supports the health and happiness of employees. Furthermore, laws such as the Wage Board Ordinance and the Shop and Office Workers Act regulate minimum wages, overtime pay and working hours, ensuring that workers are treated fairly (Gunathilake, 2021). For example, offering flexible working hours or professional development opportunities can help keep employees motivated beyond fulfilling legal obligations (Fernando & Cohen, 2022).

The peak of this is when there is a layoff. Employees can seek help here when they feel that the termination of employment was unfair or unjust to the employee. Protects against unfair dismissal. (Nanayakkara, 2019).

On the positive side, compliance with labor laws builds trust between employers and employees. When companies follow these regulations and also introduce well-being initiatives, like health benefits or work-from-home options, employees feel valued and more engaged (Seneviratne, 2020).


Conclusion 

Sri Lanka's labor law has a major impact on human resource management. Companies need to balance legal requirements with the need to support employee well-being. Compliance is necessary, and HR professionals can create a positive workplace that exceeds minimum legal standards.

At Seylan Bank, I’ve seen how closely HR works to ensure all policies follow labor laws. The bank also focuses on employee well-being through programs that support work-life balance and career growth. This mix of compliance and care creates a work environment where employees feel respected and supported Another one of my memories is that in a famous Sri Lankan company where I worked before, one employee was dismissed very unfairly and he went to the law through labor laws and received a large amount of compensation from that company.
